Mission & Vision of the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center

Honoring President Elson S. Floyd’s commitment to culture and diversity as the core of Washington State University’s education, research, and outreach mission, the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center provides inclusive, creative and educational programming to empower and transform individuals and communities.

Focused on its dedication to engage diverse populations and increase cross-cultural understanding, the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center facilitates critical dialogues around race, ethnicity, intersectional identities, systems of oppression, cultural empowerment, and social justice.  The Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center provides a supportive and welcoming place for the University and community to advance diversity and socially conscious research, engagement, outreach, and innovation.

The CREATE Model

All reservation requests are reviewed by the ESFCC Advisory Council and considered against the CREATE model, developed based on the mission and vision of the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center.

Culture

We celebrate and understand culture as dynamic, intersectional, and constantly changing. Cultural histories and knowledge systems are valued and promoted through academic and co-curricular activities.

Research and Creativity

We seek solutions to long-standing problems of systemic inequality in opportunity, access, education, health, and employment for individuals and communities.

Education

We promote holistic, inclusive, and culturally responsive programming to learn and engage through workshops, speakers, training, and cultural events.

Advancing Opportunity and Equity

We pursue justice in education, access, research, and engagement through interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations consistent with WSU’s land-grant mission.

Tradition and Transformational Experiences

We encourage individuals and communities to explore multiple ways of knowing and engaging as a means to realize personal and social change.

Empowerment

Through all this work, we inspire each other to continue to imagine, pursue, and realize a better world.
